Chic amusement parks, unique settings and freak funhouses! Tivoli Gardens and Bakken are both in, or within easy distance of, Copenhagen yet they are completely worlds apart

The glamorous upmarket Tivoli Gardens is an oasis in the centre of the Danish capital, the breathtaking gardens are home to a fine array of restaurants, bars and food outlets, large entertainment stages and a delicately balanced selection of modern and traditional amusement rides

Bakken has a much bolder carnival tang, set in the middle of the woods just a short train ride from Copenhagen, this park has a real zest for providing a much more brazen selection of amusement rides

The mostly contemporary collection of rides includes a family mine train coaster, a double shot tower ride and a 3D cinema with special effects, however Bakken still shows signs of its historic roots with the Rutschebanen scenic railway coaster standing proudly in the centre of the park

Bakken and Tivoli were well-organized at managing the crowds, we hardly had to queue at all. Both parks operate a pay-per-ride system, nonetheless unlimited ride passes are available and are certainly the best value option, admission to Bakken was free, while Tivoli charged a small fee to cover the large program of entertainment on the bill

Getting around Copenhagen was very straight forward, the trains were modern, efficient and always on time, our hotel was a short stroll from Tivoli, we found it easy to pop out, go drop stuff off at the hotel and then return to the park, great for pacing the day as Tivoli stayed open until midnight

Denmark was a very welcoming destination with both Tivoli Gardens and Bakken successfully able to seduce, capture and charm with their own distinctive brands of escape respectively
